General Discussion / DWC Live Q & A session - May 24th -9 pm est
« Last post by Phantom on May 16, 2018, 08:46:15 PM »
I am having a casual Questions & Answers session on DWC's 30th day on ReVo. Maybe some folks are confused about what the room is about or how it will work- so here's a chance to find out a little about what it entails. I'll also help anyone brainstorm ideas and maybe even take  some suggestions.  So if you're curious or just want to hang out and see what's going on, come on over! Bring your buddies too!   :)

What is DWC? / What's this room about?
« Last post by Phantom on April 27, 2018, 04:31:50 PM »
It's a fair question.  The answer may not be simple enough for ya but let's give it a try:

DWC is essentially a hybrid between free-form and traditional tabletop roleplay systems set in modern, urban fantasy or futuristic genres. (Stay with me.) This room aims to dedicate itself to the idea of all-inclusive storytelling with a nod to the traditions of tabletop gaming. While room-sponsored story-lines will (in due time) be the main focus of the room, independent players will be encouraged to create their own stories, troupes, and campaigns. The room uses SOME (not all)  aspects of White Wolf’s [old] World of Darkness character creation and combat methods. But  it does not consider itself a “by the book” take on that system.

There is a heavy emphasis on being a part of the big picture here. In other words, being part of a community is a plus.  If you choose, the character that you play will be a puzzle piece that, when fitted in, creates a clearer, more complete picture for you and everyone around you. We want you to think outside of the box. We want you to not only challenge yourself, but the people around you. We want you to watch what happens when you dare to challenge or stray away from the path your character was set on by whatever power that's dictating the story.

Or, if you want, be the storyteller yourself! There is a lot of fun to be had in the push and pull that comes with trying to get your "puppet-master" hooks into someone else's creation.

Depending on the kind of story you want to tell or participate in, dice-rolls will not be the end all and be all of what happens next. The real power of a story lies in the strength of words, right? Yet at the same time, one could argue that chance plays a big roll  --err...  Ahem...  Excuse me... That is: Chance plays a big role as well.

Example: Do you really want to try jumping across that chasm between two buildings to get away from that... thing... that just chased you up seven flights of stairs?  Better make up your mind quick. That isn't exactly opportunity knocking the hinges off that bolted metal door behind you.

In a situation like that you may have to roll the dice. Or, because it's just you and your partner telling a two-person story, you might not have to roll at all.

Don't feel like being part of anything big right away? That's fine. Your first 2 characters DO NOT require a character sheet and don't even have to be in any kind of community campaign. Get your feet wet! See if you like it here or not. Play those first two characters all you want without ever having to fill out those darn forms... (See more on character sheet requirements here)

Keep in mind that no story is too big or too small. Whether it’s the grand expanse of White Wolf’s gothic-punk setting merging with a criminal underworld full of biker gangs (SoA?) and criminal organizations; a serial killer plaguing the denizens of an American city and the drama that ensues; or the story of three random people thrust together in a small town trying to survive a mysterious outbreak-- DWC will be the host and herald of many a dark tale.

Important - Please read and know / Unacceptable character concepts... (for now...)
« Last post by Phantom on April 27, 2018, 02:13:27 PM »
The following character concepts are not allowed:*

-FOR THE TIME BEING we are not accepting non-starter type characters. Meaning, no "powerful" characters. Early on in DWC we want to stress that there is an extreme amount of fun in having your character progress and grow at a set pace-- Being shaped by the journey that they are on. Yep. So only "fledgling" characters for now... Trust me, you'll love it!
-LKH Characters
-Concepts stemming from Marvel, DC, and the overall comic book world
-Cannon characters of any kind from any genre. (including from TV shows, movies, novels, and video games)

That being said, you can always ask or try to convince us otherwise!

*(This list is subject to change at the discretion of Room Leadership)

What is DWC? / FAQs
« Last post by Phantom on April 24, 2018, 09:47:58 PM »
What exactly do you mean by "hybrid"?

Basically it just means that we are going to have genres mix and meld together. Have you ever watched the Sopranos? Did you really enjoy the run that Sons of Anarchy had? What if the two shows came back to TV together for an epic mini-series? Or how about this-- take James Cameron's short-lived TV series Dark Angel starring Jessica Alba and fuse it with the world that Sam and Dean Winchester live in on Supernatural.  In short: Worlds will blend. The average Joe or Jane will deal with the unexpected.

Can I play a Laurell K. Hamilton (LKH) character here?

That’s a negative. LKH vampires and lycanthropes are not consistent with the way oWoD vampires and were-things work. For that reason DWC will not be accepting any character-types that are from Anitaverse.  This may change in the future, but don't count on it.

What the heck is this "old World of Darkness" thing you keep mentioning?

Oh the wonders of wikipedia. Click the link, my friend, and be enlightened. -->Link

Do I have to know or read the old ("Classic") World of Darkness core books in order to roleplay here?

No you do not! Want to know why? Because this is not a World of Darkness exclusive room. However, room sponsored campaigns that DO steer in that direction are designed to be very beginner friendly. Because most players are not familiar with it, we aim to ease you into the WoD fold. We lay it out for you in a way that's easy to understand. Resources are provided here on the forums for your convenience. Furthermore, everything you need to know about oWod can be learned or discovered simply by playing someone relatively new to that environment.  The theory is that, for example,  your average human character doesn’t even know or believe that supernatural beings really exist. Nor do they know anything about the politics behind the shadowy wars that rage all around them. In that respect, DWC wants to stress the human element. And that means you could play a character that never even deals with one supernatural in all the time spent within the various settings. And when all else fails, we have friendly people ready to take your questions and help you along!

Ugh. Do I have to submit a character sheet?

Yes... and no! Or no… and yes! You can play two characters in DWC without submitting a character sheet. But for every third character you bring in, we demand (yes DEMAND) that you submit a character sheet for at least ONE of your characters. Why? Because we want you to become part of the fabric here! Come on-- If you’re roleplaying here with three characters it means you like us! You really like us!   ;D Character sheets will help storytellers put you into the best situations as far as conflict and intrigue. And that’s where the magic happens. Think of it as an investment towards future fun. And even if you’re not into the style of rolling for ANYTHING during your roleplaying, a character sheet can give storytellers a basic framework of just what lies beneath the surface of your mysterious character. The numbers let us know what you are capable of and guides the way we can challenge your character to grow and become even more badass. Or you know… Maybe we just want to torture you a little. Nothing wrong with that...

Can I start my own storyline or be my own storyteller?

Absolutely! There will eventually be a lot to choose from. That’s the goal anyway. But there will always be room for more.  Room sponsored storylines will be storylines that we want the masses to dive into and that anyone can join. But private storylines, or storylines that are closed off or limited, are very much encouraged. Grab your buddies and start a troupe. Or just do the boy meets girl thing in a one-on-one. Have at it. Just… er… never you mind that moving eyeball in that hole in the wall… You don’t see that. Nope. You don’t see that at all...

Important - Please read and know / The Rules and Guidelines
« Last post by Phantom on April 24, 2018, 09:12:06 PM »
Etiquette:

1. All of roleplayevolution.com's site sules apply. Please read and adhere to them.

2. Our Golden Rule: Treat others the way you want to be treated. Don't be rude.

3. Check all of the out-of-character drama at the door. This is a drama-free zone. Please be forewarned: There is a LOW tolerance for o-o-c altercations. If you have a problem with someone in attendance you can simply ignore them.  Or you can use the site resources and functions available to you. That said, in-character drama is what we are looking for!

4. Please try to keep out-of-character chat to a minimum when there are multiple stories being told in room.  While we do like people chewing the fat or a healthy friendly debate when there is a long break in the action, we do NOT appreciate excessive banter while players are telling a story. Be considerate to those who are waiting on in-character posts.

5. Take a proper name. We want to welcome you and have you join us. Curious observers are more than welcome. But using an "anonymous" name will get you promptly ushered out and off the premises. Our bouncers are beasts!

Roleplay:

1. DWC is a “hybrid” room.  Modern fantasy, Urban fantasy, horror, and apocalyptic stories are all welcome. Not all storylines will intersect, but some will. Create your storyline, cast your player(s), and go!

2. No LKH characters. (See here for more about acceptable characters)

3. Your first 2 characters in DWC do not and will not require a character sheet. However, for every 3rd character you bring in 1 must be submitted and may be subject to “room-sponsored” storylines. Only submitted characters can become involved in room campaigns and events. Of course, you can decide to submit sheets at will for any or every character. A character is considered "IN" the DWC room after about five separate days of at least one in-character post.

4. FYI: For some campaigns (not all!), DWC adopts elements of old World of Darkness storytelling.

5. The playing out of mass destruction or carnage will not be allowed or recognized unless you have an approved character-sheet or an approved story-line in room. The unauthorized damage to any setting or NPC is a big no-no unless you have been approved by the person running your story. Player-on-player harm WITHOUT being approved (unless agreed upon by consenting parties) is also a no-no. Keep in mind that actions have consequences.  Room leadership reserves the right to set plot devices in motion to counteract major disturbances.

6. There is a big difference between out-of-character information and in-character information. Please recognize and know the difference. No character is "all-knowing."

7. This is an adult setting. Nudity, violence, vulgar language and strong sexual themes will happen. If you are under the age of 18 -- do not participate or observe.  If you are offended by anything you are witnessing you may promptly exit.

8. Room leadership will attempt to mediate or arbitrate any IC or OOC matters of conflict. But in the end the RC's decision is law and is final. All of DWC rules are subject to change at the room owner's discretion.

9. The most important rule of all: Have fun!
